Misophonia Support That Honors Your Nervous System

You're not overreacting, your body is protecting you. Misophonia therapy can help you find calm.

Certain sounds: chewing, sniffing, tapping, can feel unbearable. And what others barely register sends your body into overdrive. You might feel rage, panic, disgust, or shame. You might isolate, brace yourself, or leave the room. And later, you wonder:

 “Why can’t I handle this?”

You’re not broken. You’re not imagining it.

This is Misophonia; a sound sensitivity condition that deserves real support, not just tolerance.

At Safe Harbor Counseling of Missouri, we offer Misophonia therapy online for adults across the state. Our approach is trauma-informed, grounded in empathy, and designed to help you feel more in control, without forcing yourself to push through.

You Meet a Guide Who Gets It and Helps You Get Relief.

Michael Mason, M.Ed., LPC, NCC – founder of Safe Harbor Counseling smiling outdoors in blue shirt

You don’t have to explain everything, your Misophonia story is safe and understood here.

Hi, I’m Michael Mason, M.Ed., LPC, NCC, a trauma-informed, LGBTQ+-affirming, veteran therapist offering telehealth therapy throughout Missouri.

If you’re living with Misophonia, I want you to know that your nervous system is doing what it was designed to do: protect you from perceived harm. But when those reactions hijack your daily life and leave you feeling anxious or ashamed, it’s time to work with your system, not against it.

That’s what I help you do.

About Michael

The Plan: Misophonia Therapy Using IFS

IFS therapy helps you calm sound triggers by working with the parts of you that react to protect you

We use a model called Internal Family Systems (IFS), a gentle yet powerful approach that views your inner world like a team. Each part of you has a job:

  • The part that flares up in response to trigger sounds

  • The part that panics or shuts down afterward

  • The part that feels ashamed or confused

Instead of pushing these reactions down, we get to know them. We listen. We learn how they’re trying to help. And eventually, they learn to trust you, not just react for you.

Over time, your system softens. You respond instead of react. You reclaim your peace.

Man at sunset — Misophonia online therapy Missouri support

Step-by-step therapy tailored to you, guided by trust, curiosity, and deep respect for your experien

Our sessions are paced to meet you where you are. You can expect:

  1. Safety First
We build trust before we go deep. No pressure. Just space to feel grounded and seen.

  2. Mapping Triggers with Curiosity
Together, we identify your unique sound triggers and explore how your body and emotions respond.

  3. Introducing Your Protective Parts
Using IFS, we learn how different parts of you react and why, without judgment.

  4. Regulation Skills That Actually Work
We practice nervous system calming tools, mindfulness, and personalized strategies you can use in daily life.

  5. Ongoing Integration
Our goal is more than symptom relief, it’s lasting change. As your parts learn to trust your Self-leadership, you’ll experience more inner space and fewer extreme reactions.

What Changes Over Time with Misophonia Therapy Support

Experience more calm, less reactivity, and deeper trust in yourself as you heal with IFS therapy.

Imagine this:

  • You hear a sound and feel your body stay grounded

  • You know what to do in the moment, without spiraling

  • You explain your needs with confidence, not shame

  • You set boundaries in social settings that protect your peace

  • You re-engage with people and places that you used to avoid

That’s what transformation looks like, not perfection, but peace.
