I'm Michael, licensed professional counselor and founder of Safe Harbor Counseling, and my life’s tapestry is woven with threads of challenge and change—from the adversity of homelessness to the discipline of military service and the victory of personal transformation. These experiences, especially navigating the complexities of trauma, have honed my empathy and fueled my dedication to therapy as a vessel for change.
As a therapist, I bring a blend of patience, understanding, and an unwavering belief in the potential within us all. My approach is informed by not only academic rigor but also by the lived reality of overcoming profound challenges. This personal journey has empowered me to assist others in charting their course through life's storms.
Born and raised in South Texas’s Rio Grande Valley, I’ve witnessed firsthand the complexities of life in an impoverished border region. Growing up as a minority within a Hispanic-majority culture and navigating the challenges posed by differing societal norms, I’ve developed a unique perspective that informs my approach as a therapist.
My journey has been shaped by diverse experiences, including serving as a US Army combat engineer from 1997 to 2004. Life has presented me with its share of obstacles, including mental illness and the challenges that come with late-life diagnoses of ADHD, ASD, and CPTSD. These experiences have fostered a deep empathy and understanding that I bring to my practice.
At home and in school, I continue to learn the art of servant leadership while nurturing my soul through hobbies like photography and playing the guitar. My past role as a chaplain for the elderly and homeless for over nine years has shown me the commonalities in our struggles and the universal need for compassion and support. These experiences have prepared me for my calling as a therapist.
After moving to St. Louis with nothing but a high school diploma, I pursued higher education with determination. I hold an associate degree from St. Louis Community College, a bachelor's in psychology, and a Master of Education in Psychological Counseling from the University of Missouri-St. Louis (UMSL). Now, as a fully Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Nationally Board-Certified Counselor (NCC), I am dedicated to helping others overcome mental illness, trauma, and other challenges that lead to marginalization or self-destruction.
In my practice at Safe Harbor Counseling of Missouri, I specialize in treating anxiety, depression, trauma, and relationship challenges. My approach includes cognitive-behavioral therapy, mindfulness-based techniques, and solution-focused therapy. I work extensively with veterans, the LGBTQ+ community, and individuals facing significant life challenges, providing them with a compassionate and tailored approach to therapy.
As a U.S. Army veteran and Licensed Professional Counselor, I offer more than just counseling; I provide companionship on the journey to healing and growth. My mission is to create a safe space where clients can find solace, understanding, and the tools to rediscover their strength and purpose. By drawing on my military experience and professional training, I strive to foster hope, resilience, and empowerment in each client.
At Safe Harbor Counseling of Missouri, our mission is to be a guiding light for individuals facing mental health, identity, and life challenges. We are committed to offering a sanctuary of healing, understanding, and empowerment, providing the tools for our clients to rediscover their strength and purpose. We are now accepting telehealth clients and invite you to join us on this journey of healing and growth.
