Internal Family Systems (IFS) Therapy in Missouri

Empowering your inner world with empathy, clarity, and care.

What Is Internal Family Systems (IFS)?

Internal Family Systems (IFS) is a gentle, evidence-based therapy model that helps you explore the different parts of yourself, all the voices, reactions, or patterns that may feel conflicted or confusing. These “parts” often show up as the inner critic, the anxious one, the perfectionist, or the part that shuts down. They all have stories to tell, and reasons for being there.

IFS supports you in getting to know these parts with compassion. As you do, you reconnect with your core Self, the calm, clear, and wise center of who you are. From that place, deep and lasting healing becomes possible.

At Safe Harbor Counseling, we integrate trauma-informed Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy into many of our sessions, always at your pace and with your consent.

How We Practice IFS at Safe Harbor

At Safe Harbor Counseling of Missouri, we integrate trauma-informed Internal Family Systems (IFS) therapy into many of our sessions. Whether you’re meeting with me, Michael Mason, M.Ed., LPC, NCC, or my colleague Misty Relos, MA, LPC, NCC, we both bring years of clinical experience and a shared belief that you already have the wisdom you need inside you.

IFS therapy gives that inner wisdom a voice.

  • Michael often uses IFS with individuals navigating childhood wounds, military-related trauma, and identity-related struggles. As a veteran and LGBTQ+ affirming therapist, I know how deeply parts can internalize survival roles. IFS has been a transformative way to unburden those parts with compassion.   “As someone who’s done my own deep work with IFS, I don’t just guide from training, I walk beside you with lived experience and empathy.”

  • Misty brings a warm, nonjudgmental presence and helps clients use IFS to explore relational pain, burnout, and self-worth. With gentle guidance, she helps each person build trust with the parts of themselves they’ve long felt disconnected from. “So many people come in feeling broken. IFS helps them meet that feeling with kindness instead of shame—and discover that they’ve never really been broken at all.”

Together, we hold space for your internal system to feel safe, seen, and ready for healing. There’s no rush, no pressure, just steady, supportive guidance.

Who Is IFS Therapy For?

IFS therapy is especially helpful for people who:

  • Experience internal conflict or overwhelming emotions

  • Struggle with trauma or post-traumatic stress (PTSD or CPTSD)

  • Constantly prioritize others while neglecting your own needs (people-pleasing)

  • Feel stuck in burnout, exhaustion, or emotional shutdown

  • Carry shame, fear, or anxiety rooted in childhood experiences

  • Identify as LGBTQ+ and have faced rejection, invalidation, or identity trauma

  • Are a veteran holding unseen pain and layered protective responses

Many of our clients come to us after trying other therapy models that felt too clinical or didn’t go deep enough. IFS offers a different path, one rooted in inner connection, not just symptom reduction.

If you’ve ever felt like part of you wants change… and part of you is scared or stuck, IFS can help those parts finally talk to each other.

“At first, I thought therapy meant learning how to ‘fix myself.’ But IFS helped me realize: the parts of me that felt broken were just trying to protect something tender. I’m finally learning how to listen without fear.”
